First snow of the Year

Today we woke up with a soft snow that lasted until 4:00 pm in the Wasatch Front. Having moved here from a state where snow rarely fell it amazes me watching snow fall in Utah.

Did you know that snow is frozen water that falls from the sky? In Utah we normally receive very soft, fluffy snow which must sound weird when you think of frozen water falling. And snow flakes have 6 sides but are never the same. The flakes in Utah are usually quite big about the size of a quarter.

If you enjoy snow, mountains, and a chill air you will love coming to Utah.

Many of they years you will find very few live trees with fall foliage but this year is the best I have seen! Visiting Silver Lake in the Fall

Silver Lake can be found by driving up Big Cottonwood Canyon and heading straight up towards Brighton Ski Resort. Silver Lake is the parking lot prior to Brighton.

Once you park you easily walk on the "boardwalk" towards the lake and up into the mountains. It was extremely crisp on this day and the place was hopping with lots of visitors. The mountains are just beautiful with the fall foliage inviting you to step into it's beauty. Have fun and walk the family around and enjoy the beauty and the jumping fish in the lake!

Beautfiul Pictures of Fall Foliage comes with cost

This is just a handful of beautiful pictures we took after scaling a mountainside. This grove of trees were remarkable but extremely hard to get to. I think you will agree it was worth the cost! The trees are up Big Cottonwood Canyon almost at the top of Guardsman Pass. The trees just look amazing right now!

Fall Leaves in Big Cottonwood Canyon Utah September 27 2008

We love taking leisurely drives up Big Cottonwood Canyon in Salt Lake City Utah. Starting from the mouth for the canyon you instantly begin seeing brilliant red leaves of trees spread out amongst the side of the canyon.

The most brilliant trees can be found at the top of the mountains next to the Ski Resorts; Solitude and Brighton. They are also easily found next to Silver Lake.

The colors are out and this is truly the best Fall Foliage show over the last 10 years.

If you are around the Salt Lake City area for the next 2-3 weeks you will want to add this
drive to your list of things to do.
Their are still many patches of areas that haven't even started turning which means the next few weeks each day in the mountains is as glorious as the day before.

This first picture was actually extremely hard to get to. We had to scale the side of the mountain that was virtually straight down. Thankfully the rocks sticking out of the mountains were solidly embedded in the mountain and gave perfect footage for part of the way down. It was a grove of extremely brilliant trees.

These next two pictures were taken at Brighton Ski Resort and at the top of Guardsman Pass and were easily accessible to (sides of the road).

I really hope you enjoy the pictures and I have so many I will keep posting them for everyone to take advantage of!

Fall Leaves in Utah are here

It is time to visit Utah to see the beautiful Fall trees. The leaves are changing and they seem to be more brilliant than I have seen them in the last two years. Now is the time to begin traveling through the Utah Canyons to visit the intense tree foliage.


This red tree was found on the side of the canyon between Deer Valley and Park City. This was taken two weeks ago.

This cluster of trees were found between Big Cottonwood Canyon and the turn off through Guardsman Pass. When you reach the top of Guardsman Pass pull over and take a walk up the mountains. You will have some intense yellow quakies that are so beautiful to watch right now.

We were able to go up on a Sunday and sit next to a grove of trees. Very few cars up at the top and very few people walking around. It was so beautiful, and the breeze had the tree leaves dropping all around us! God's beauty at it's best!

The top of this tree is just so cool. I love when trees change from yellow to orange and then into the deep red. Fall is such a wonderful breathtaking time.

I-215 South to exit 6200 South Exit. Turn right onto Wasatch Boulevard, then turn left at Big Cottonwood Canyon. Head towards Brighton and Solitude Ski resorts.

Hidden Falls Mill B - North Fork Trail 4.4 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon (North of the Mill B South Fork Picnic area)

• Interpretive Trail is paved for easy access by all and reaches a small waterfall for enjoyment

Mill B - South Fork Interpretive Trail is 4.4 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon and is located in Twin Peaks Wilderness Area.

Silver Lake in Big Cottonwood Canyon Utah

Silver Lake is a short drive up Big Cottonwood Canyon next to Brighton Ski Resort in Utah. Silver Lake is a perfect family outing which offers wildlife, fishing, picnicking and hiking. We took the scenic drive up Big Cottonwood Canyon and pulled into the Solitude Nordic Center. Walking past the picnicking areas are laid out pathways around Silver Lake and up to the mountain areas making it safe for any age.

Many children were fishing with their parents while other families were hiking around Silver Lake. We saw fish swimming in the water, ducks, chipmunks and lots of dragonfly's. Many people had sighted Moose but we were not so lucky on our outing.

The fresh mountain air was amazing to breathe in. I had forgotten how clean air smells and the water was so clean you could see to the bottom which is why we were able to see the fish swimming around.

A little ways up from Silver Lake is are additional path's to Twin Lakes and Lake Solitude. Here is a map of the pathways if you are interested in heading up.

One of our favorite moments is when the children started feeding the ducks. A baby duck and adult duck were fighting for the food and it was fun to watch the children feed out of their hands.

Directions: for those who have never been to Silver Lake you will go up Big Cottonwood Canyon, pass Solitude Resort and head for Brighton. On the right side of the street before Brighton

Ski Resort you will see a blue sign that reads: Solitude Nordic Center. Turn into this parking lot and go out on the pathways towards Silver Lake.

It was a beautiful drive up big Cottonwood Canyon as we saw many people bicycling, kayaking, fishing, and hiking in the Mountains yesterday. The trees look lush and green which is a good sign for a beautiful fall this year.

Where to go for Fall Leaves in Utah

Fall Color will soon be here. In Utah the Fall leaves reflect brilliant reds, sunny yellows and extreme oranges to leave you breathless. Travel through the many Utah Canyons to view the spectacular fireworks of Fall Color. Stop and explore the many trails throughout the Canyon rodes that will leave a lasting memory in your mind. This fall show will be seen by millions of travelers this year. Shouldn't you be one of them?

No matter where you are in Utah their is a Canyon close by that will reveal the beauty of this years Fall Leaves to you. Take a afternoon to drive up the canyon to view the Fall Color Leaves.

I am listing my top 3 routes we like to take each year starting in early September for the Northern drives into November for the Southern trails.

Alpine Loop
Located in American Fork and a $3.00 usage fee take UT 92 E from the Alpine / Timpanogos Cave National Monument exit #287 off I-15, or exit #275 off I-15 in Orem and take UT 52 E to US 189 to UT 92. UT 92

Big Cottonwood Canyon
Take 1-215 Exit 6 and follow UT 190 South to the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Turn left which puts you on UT 190 going straight up the canyon. You will pass the Water Treatment plant on the left and many picnicking areas on the right. You will go up the winding roads and pass Solitude Mountain Resort and keep heading straight towards Brighton. You can stop at the Solitude Nordic Center and walk around Silver Lake or go a little further to tje Brighton Ski Resort. Coming back down the mountain you will have a option to take Guardsman's Pass. This takes you further up the mountain where you end at a drop off that people use the ledge to park cars. If you go left down the dirt road you will take a unpaved scenic tour where you can choose to drive to Park City or to Heber. The right is a pathway to walk through the forest.

Brigham City through Logan's Sardine Canyon to the crystal blue Bear Lake
US 89-91 from Brigham City North to Logan via Sardine Canyon. You will have a pristine 25 mile scenic drive through changing reds, yellows and orange fall leave show. Continue Northeast from Logan on US 89 to Bear Lake through Logan Canyon.
**While in Bear Lake stop and enjoy the famous Raspberry Shakes

Get off I-215 south at Exit 6, then proceed S on UT 190. Continue straight through the Big Cottonwood Canyon intersection. The route becomes UT 210. Follow this road, which becomes Little Cottonwood Canyon (UT 210). Snowbird and Alta resorts are located up Little Cottonwood Canyon. The road continues from Alta to Albion Basin.

Millcreek Canyon which charges $2.25 usage fee unless you have reserved a group site of Church Fork, Box Elder, and Terrances. For reservations call Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation at 801-483-5473.
Take 1-215 Exit #4 and take Wasatch Boulevard to 3800 South and turn East.

Q4U Ribs are fall off the bone good

We just went to Q4U BBQ today located at 3951 W 5400 S Kearns in Utah. When you first walk in you can smell the smoke of the bar-b-Que which makes you salivate and you will notice they have trophies all over the back wall along with a long wall of pictures and awards they have won.

Janet was our waitress and she was very relaxed and polite. She made the atmosphere extremely friendly and fun. This was our first experience at Q4U so we didn't really know what to expect but if you are in Kearns (next to Taylorsville) this is a must try. We ordered the Darn Snacky Pork Spare Rib Sandwich, and Famous Half Slab (6 ribs) with a side of onion hushpuppies.

Our side dishes were yams, potato salad and Q's cole slaw. For me the Q's cole slaw was the best. The yams reminded me of the kind I would eat at Thanksgiving Dinner without the marshmallows. They were marinated in brown sugar and perfectly sweetened.

The ribs were hands down both of our favorites. They literally fell off the bone (the bone was completely meat free). The ribs were seasoned perfectly and the hot & regular sauces accompanied the ribs with great flavor.

The pork was juicy, soft and delicious but I kept coming back to the ribs which are my favorite kind of meat anyway. The next time we go back I am getting the 12 ribs so I can have left overs.







picture of 6 ribs although you can't see the meat very well and I was anxious to eat so I didn't take the time to move the plate around. The bones were bare with no meat on them (they are purely for decoration) so we picked up most of the meat with our hands when the fork wasn't cutting it.

My pulled pork sandwich. I ate the meat right out of the bun and each bite was just intense of smoke flavor. The meat was perfectly cooked and juicy (I hate dry pulled pork). The pulled pork great but I still found myself eating the Ribs because they were so much better.

Ruths Chris Steakhouse in Hotel Park City

We had a business guest flying in from Texas and we needed a nice relaxing place to take him for dinner. We listen to the Sean Hannity radio broadcast and figured we could all find something on the menu that we would enjoy.

We arrived at 6:45 and the hostess promptly seated us. We hadn't heard from your Texan client and he was supposed to land in SLC at 4:30 with plans to meet up in Park City for Dinner. He wasn't answering his phone so we thought maybe he got lost or had other issues and proceeded with ordering. At 7:00 we received a call from our client stating the plane was late and he just got his car. We had already placed our order and eaten our appetizers (salad and soup) so we asked our waitress if we could put our order on hold until our guest arrived. He was especially nice about this and said that would be fine.

7:15 our client shows up (that is fast by anyones driving standards from SLC to Park City). He floored it up the mountain and said on the plane he was getting himself excited about eating a good steak tonight. He also told us he knows his steaks and would let us know how this place sized up. He orderd a prime cut with blue cheese crust and took his first bite. He literally sat back in his chair and melted. He started raving this was the best steak he had ever eaten.

I had the Ahi Tuna and Kirt tried the mixed platter of tomato, crab cake, steak and chicken. Literally the steak was marinated in butter and just melts in your mouth. We had potato au gratin and mushrooms as sides. But my favorite part was the cheesecake. It was huge and it had a light layer of sour cream on it. I almost ate the whole thing but it was seriously so good.

Needless to say a business deal was struck that night and an impression was made on us. We are ready to go back and eat at Ruths Chris Steakhouse again. The dining room is located in a beautiful setting, with tall windows looking out on the Hotel Park City golf course and everything was green and beautiful. I can only imagine how beautiful this will look in the winter snow with a roaring fireplace.

Ahi Tuna was well seasoned and the Lobster was delicious. I will say the portions seemed huge to me and I couldn't finish it all.
