First snow of the Year

Today we woke up with a soft snow that lasted until 4:00 pm in the Wasatch Front. Having moved here from a state where snow rarely fell it amazes me watching snow fall in Utah.

Did you know that snow is frozen water that falls from the sky? In Utah we normally receive very soft, fluffy snow which must sound weird when you think of frozen water falling. And snow flakes have 6 sides but are never the same. The flakes in Utah are usually quite big about the size of a quarter.

If you enjoy snow, mountains, and a chill air you will love coming to Utah.

Tis the season for:
skiing
cross-country skiing
snowboarding
Snowshoes
Sledding
Snow ball fights

For those that have a chance to visit Utah I hope you enjoy the chance to watch the snow fall!

Things to do for Halloween in Utah County

Every year in Utah I begin my search for "things to do" for Halloween ambiance. I love getting into the Halloween Spirit early so I can enjoy the full month of spooks and treats. We love chocolate, hand made candies, and Halloween toys.

The first week of Halloween we usually spend a day decorating the inside of the house. On our most adventurous Holidays we buy a few bales of hay, and corn stalks to decorate the outside. Next we begin planning our Halloween adventures for fun. We look for pumpkin patches, hay rides, spook alleys, Frightmares at Lagoon, and Haunted Forests as our main staple of entertainment. For real excitement we book tickets with Theatrical plays based on Halloween themes.

Some of the fun activities going on in Utah this year are:

Ideas for Planning a successful Party -

  1. Keep it simple
  2. Keep it short
  3. Ask for help
  4. Keep it safe

Parties don't need to cost a lot nor be blown out of proportion. Once you identify the theme of the party identify your budget and begin planning around that price. Next find 1-2 items that will get you bang for buck. Focus on small items that have huge impacts on the looks and feel to the event.

Example: I am throwing a company party for 50 people and have a budget of $3750.00 or $75.00 per person. What are my options?

  1. Rent a theatre room for a new release movie
  2. Look at catering at a nice location and bring a belly dancer and karoke as entertainment
  3. Take them River Rafting
  4. Take them Hot Air Ballooning
  5. Try indoor skydiving with iflyutah.com
  6. Rent a barn at Wheeler Farm, Have meiers catering with the chuck wagon and have rent a entertainment show

Many of they years you will find very few live trees with fall foliage but this year is the best I have seen! Solitude Ski Resort in Fall Foliage

Solitude Ski Resort is one of the more famously loved ski resorts in Utah. It's close to Salt Lake City, has wonderful winding mountain roads up Big Cottonwood Canyon and yet takes very little time to get to.

During the Fall season you will find some extremely vibrant fall foliage that will delight your senses next to Solitude.

You will find huge patches of intense yellows surrounding the Solitude Ski Resort. Starting at the entrances you will be greeted by flaming yellows and oranges.

It's beautiful to pull into the parking lot of Solitude and be welcomed by clusters of fall foliage at it's best!

This next picture is high in the mountain top with the chair lifts. Can you picture taking a ride on the Solitude chair lifts to enjoy the beauty of the trees. This would be an amazing ride up and down but unfortunately the ski lifts aren't running yet!

The leaves this year have been extremely healthy. I was able to get close enough to this tree (3rd picture) to show you the health of the leaves along with the richness of color found in Utah.

If you are in Utah for the month of October do not hesitate to take a drive up the mountains. Within 1-2 hours you can enjoy all areas of the mountain along with stopping and taking a few hikes up to enjoy the trees within the mountain.

Brighton Ski Resort in the Fall

Utah is a Four Seasons state with noticeable weather changes during the spring, summer, autumn, and winter months. This year I believe the fall leaves have been the most intense I have seen them in the last 10 years. It has been truly amazing to enjoy in this wonderful autumn season.

Being only a 10 minute drive to the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon we have been taking a lot of mini-excursions up the Canyon because the brilliance of the leaves keep changing each day. Seriously within 5 days we have seen huge changes in the trees and the rich colors of the trees foliage.

Normally Utah is a dry, deseret and we don't get much rain. This year however; it seemed to rain just enough in the mountains and a few days ago their was a huge lightening storm in the mountains, the air has told cold and the weather conditions have been perfect for an extremely beautiful fall.

We have seen some beautiful clusters of trees just bursting with yellos, reds and oranges. Also, when we get close to the trees I have noticed that the leaves look extremely healthy. Normally they are brown with disease but this year they just look perky and whole. It's truly wonderful to see the trees bounce back year after year.

Unfortunately most of the trees found while traveling up the Big Cottonwood Canyon are high on the mountain tops or straight down a mountain cliff. They are hard to reach without taking long hikes up the mountain. But the trees you see on the sides of the road this year are breathtaking and well worth the drive.

Yes, you still have time if you want to visit Utah. I believe they will last this way at least for another two weeks. We have seen huge patches of trees that are have changed to a neon green but still no color. You just know they will be bursting with color soon but it means you still have time!

These pictures were taken up at the mouth of Brighton Ski Resort. It's such a beautiful area with a cluster of red trees at the parking lot. The pictures I included here are shots of the trees in the mountains and most are actually easy to reach with a uphill climb on the trail.

For those getting ready for skiing season it's almost here! We can't wait to ski the mountains this year!

Visiting Silver Lake in the Fall

Silver Lake can be found by driving up Big Cottonwood Canyon and heading straight up towards Brighton Ski Resort. Silver Lake is the parking lot prior to Brighton.

Once you park you easily walk on the "boardwalk" towards the lake and up into the mountains. It was extremely crisp on this day and the place was hopping with lots of visitors. The mountains are just beautiful with the fall foliage inviting you to step into it's beauty. Have fun and walk the family around and enjoy the beauty and the jumping fish in the lake!

Beautfiul Pictures of Fall Foliage comes with cost

This is just a handful of beautiful pictures we took after scaling a mountainside. This grove of trees were remarkable but extremely hard to get to. I think you will agree it was worth the cost! The trees are up Big Cottonwood Canyon almost at the top of Guardsman Pass. The trees just look amazing right now!

Fall Leaves in Big Cottonwood Canyon Utah September 27 2008

We love taking leisurely drives up Big Cottonwood Canyon in Salt Lake City Utah. Starting from the mouth for the canyon you instantly begin seeing brilliant red leaves of trees spread out amongst the side of the canyon.

The most brilliant trees can be found at the top of the mountains next to the Ski Resorts; Solitude and Brighton. They are also easily found next to Silver Lake.

The colors are out and this is truly the best Fall Foliage show over the last 10 years.

If you are around the Salt Lake City area for the next 2-3 weeks you will want to add this

drive to your list of things to do.
Their are still many patches of areas that haven't even started turning which means the next few weeks each day in the mountains is as glorious as the day before
.

This first picture was actually extremely hard to get to. We had to scale the side of the mountain that was virtually straight down. Thankfully the rocks sticking out of the mountains were solidly embedded in the mountain and gave perfect footage for part of the way down. It was a grove of extremely brilliant trees.

These next two pictures were taken at Brighton Ski Resort and at the top of Guardsman Pass and were easily accessible to (sides of the road).

I really hope you enjoy the pictures and I have so many I will keep posting them for everyone to take advantage of!

Fall Leaves in Utah are here

It is time to visit Utah to see the beautiful Fall trees. The leaves are changing and they seem to be more brilliant than I have seen them in the last two years. Now is the time to begin traveling through the Utah Canyons to visit the intense tree foliage.

This red tree was found on the side of the canyon between Deer Valley and Park City. This was taken two weeks ago.

This cluster of trees were found between Big Cottonwood Canyon and the turn off through Guardsman Pass. When you reach the top of Guardsman Pass pull over and take a walk up the mountains. You will have some intense yellow quakies that are so beautiful to watch right now.
We were able to go up on a Sunday and sit next to a grove of trees. Very few cars up at the top and very few people walking around. It was so beautiful, and the breeze had the tree leaves dropping all around us! God's beauty at it's best!
The top of this tree is just so cool. I love when trees change from yellow to orange and then into the deep red. Fall is such a wonderful breathtaking time.

Guardsman Pass to Heber Valley
Park City Canyon

My favorite Canyon drive around Salt Lake City is the Guardsman Pass to Heber Valley. You will feel like you are lost in a mountain of intense color. It's the beauty is just for you since very few people take these back rodes. It's worth the drive and so much fun!
